Notes

  • Abstract

Audiovisual recordings of interviews with Second World War veterans living in the Athens area.

  • Preferred Citation

Rendezvous with Destiny World War II Oral History collection, Heritage Room, The Athens-Clarke County Library.

  • Biographical / Historical

Among the topics discussed are the Battle of Anzio, the Battle of the Ardennes, the Bataan Death March, the Battle of Iwo Jima, Kamikaze airplanes, the Palawan Massacre, prisoners of war, the Battle of the Northern Marina Islands, as well as several other battles and campaigns in Africa, Belgium, Italy, East Europe, Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines. The interviewees discuss their personal achievements, providing a revealing glimpse of the experiences of soldiers during U. S. involvement in the war. Some also discuss their lives after the war.

  • Scope and Contents

The interviews were conducted by Brent Tozzer and Bob Pope, June-October, 1994, to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of D-Day. Laura Carter and Prudence Taylor, who both worked in the Heritage Room at the time, contributed to the planning of the project. Many interviewees were found through the Military Order of the Purple Heart directory. Promotional flyers were also made. Kathryn Ames, then director of the library system, also contacted veterans in the hopes of recruiting them. The interviews took place at the libraries of the Athens Regional Library System, the residencies of the veterans, or panels held by the Athens Historical Society. In 2000, Laura Carter contacted University of Georgia professor, James C. Cobb, about having students volunteer to help complete the project. These students transcribed portions of the interviews, as some content may have been missing from the audiovideo recordings. In 2013, the Heritage Room received a Historic Preservation grant from the Watson-Brown Foundation Junior Board allowing for the digitization of the video cassettes. These digital copies were also added to YouTube in 2015.
