Beth Mobley-Abney was an Athens resident who attained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism in 1956 and a Master of Arts in History in 1957, both from the University of Georgia. She married George Morris Abney, Jr., whom she met while she working on her Master’s degree. She was a freelance writer focused primarily on publicity for Athens-area organizations. She published an essay collection, Thanksgiving Every Week, in 1975, and wrote cooking columns for the Athens Banner-Herald and a recipe booklet, A Baker’s Dozen from the Cookie Lady. She was a member of the Laura Rutherford Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Elijah Clarke Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a founding member of the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation. She passed away on September 9, 2016 in Augusta, Georgia.
