Founded in 1847, Southern Mutual is one of the oldest insurance companies in the Southeast. It moved to Athens after its first year in business, being initially based in Griffin. It was housed in at least three different locations in downtown Athens, culminating in the seven-story office building erected by the company at the corner of College Avenue and Clayton Street in 1908. In recent decades, the company moved to new headquarters on Alps Road and the building, still known to many as the Southern Mutual building, for many years was officially called the Commerce Building.

  • Scope and Contents

The subcollection includes: three annual reports: 1848 (reprint from 1982); 1851 (original); and 1980 (original); an undated brochure entitled "The Southern Mutual Tradition"; a two-page print-out with "A Concise Chronology" on one page (which contains a brief note about the Southern Mutual building in downtown Athens, Georgia, more recently known as the Commerce Building) and “A Concise History” on the second.
